About diabetes research

More than five million people in the UK are living with diabetes, and the number has risen consistently over the past two decades. Type 2 diabetes accounts for the large majority of cases, though type 1 and other forms affect a substantial number of people and are managed differently.

Why diabetes research matters

Diabetes is a long-term condition, and research reflects that. Studies examine not only how blood glucose is managed but how the condition interacts with cardiovascular health, kidney function, vision and nerve health over many years. Because diabetes affects people differently depending on type, duration and individual circumstances, research covers a wide range of questions rather than a single one.

Much of the recent activity in this field concerns the relationship between metabolic health and weight, and the ways in which the two are managed together.

What taking part usually involves

Diabetes studies are frequently longer than trials in other areas, sometimes running over many months, because the questions being asked concern outcomes that develop over time. Participants usually attend regular visits where measurements are taken and the study team reviews how they are doing.

Many people find the additional monitoring valuable in itself, though studies are research rather than a substitute for routine diabetes care, which continues with your own healthcare team throughout. Taking part is voluntary and you may withdraw at any time.
