Dementia affects an estimated 900,000 people in the UK, with Alzheimer’s disease the most common form. The number is expected to rise as the population ages.

Why memory research matters

Alzheimer’s research has been among the most difficult fields in medicine, with a long history of studies that did not produce the hoped-for results. Recent years have seen renewed activity, particularly around earlier detection and around understanding the changes that occur well before symptoms become apparent.

Research in this area increasingly involves people at an early stage, and often involves carers and family members alongside them, since the perspective of someone who knows the person well is valuable in understanding how things are changing.

What taking part usually involves

Studies typically include memory and thinking assessments, which are conversational rather than tests to pass or fail. Many involve a study partner, usually a family member or close friend, who attends some visits and can describe changes they have noticed.

Consent is handled with particular care in this field, and is revisited throughout rather than taken once at the start. Taking part is voluntary at every stage and either the participant or their study partner may raise concerns at any point.
