About COPD and respiratory research

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease affects an estimated 1.2 million people diagnosed in the UK, with many more thought to be living with the condition undiagnosed. It is a leading cause of hospital admission, particularly during winter.

Why respiratory research matters

COPD is progressive, and its course varies considerably between individuals. Some people experience frequent exacerbations while others remain relatively stable for long periods, and understanding what drives that difference is a central question in the field.

Research examines how symptoms are managed day to day, how exacerbations might be reduced, and how people maintain function and independence over time. Because COPD frequently occurs alongside other long-term conditions, studies often consider respiratory health in that wider context rather than in isolation.

What taking part usually involves

Respiratory studies commonly involve breathing tests at each visit, which measure how well the lungs are working. These are straightforward and carried out by the clinical team at our sites.

Studies in this area often run across a winter period, since that is when respiratory conditions are most active. Participants attend visits at agreed intervals and may be asked to keep a simple record of symptoms in between. Your usual respiratory care continues with your own healthcare team throughout.
