About influenza and vaccine research

Influenza places a substantial burden on the UK each winter, causing hospital admissions and excess deaths concentrated among older adults and people with underlying health conditions. Because influenza viruses change continually, vaccines are reformulated each year and research into how they perform is ongoing rather than occasional.

Why vaccine research matters

Vaccine development depends on studies conducted across successive seasons and across different age groups. Researchers examine how the immune system responds to a vaccine, how long that response lasts, and how well findings hold in the populations most affected. Pandemic preparedness research runs alongside seasonal work, developing the methods and infrastructure that allow a response to be mounted quickly when a new strain emerges.

The UK contributes significantly to this field, and studies conducted here inform vaccination programmes both domestically and internationally.

What taking part usually involves

Vaccine studies are often shorter than trials in other therapeutic areas, though they may involve several visits across a season and sometimes follow-up in a subsequent one. Participants typically attend a screening appointment, receive the study vaccine or a comparator, and return for a small number of follow-up visits where samples are taken to measure the immune response.

Taking part is voluntary and you may withdraw at any point without giving a reason. All studies are approved by a Research Ethics Committee and conducted to Good Clinical Practice standards.
