About norovirus research

Norovirus is the most common cause of infectious gastroenteritis in the UK, responsible for outbreaks in hospitals, care homes, schools and cruise ships, and for a significant number of hospital bed closures each winter.

Why norovirus research matters

Despite how common it is, there is no licensed vaccine for norovirus. The virus spreads readily, immunity following infection appears to be short-lived, and multiple strains circulate simultaneously, all of which make it a harder problem than it might first appear.

The consequences fall disproportionately on health and care settings, where outbreaks close wards and disrupt services. Research aims to change that, and the UK has been an active contributor to the field internationally.

What taking part usually involves

Norovirus studies vary considerably in design. Some are conventional vaccine studies with a screening visit and a small number of follow-up appointments. Others are more involved and are explained in full before anyone decides whether to take part.

Whatever the design, the study team walks through what is involved in detail at the screening visit, and there is no obligation to proceed. Taking part is voluntary throughout and you may withdraw at any time.
