Webinar: Why the UK is winning back global clinical trials
On Friday 27th March 2026, Panthera hosted a webinar – Why the UK is winning back global clinical trials and why it is now an attractive place to run your clinical trials, exploring the UK’s evolving clinical research landscape and challenging perceptions of declining clinical trial participation in the UK.
We had an excellent turnout from a wide range of industry stakeholders, including sponsors (CROs and pharmaceutical companies) from across the globe, as well as representatives from the NIHR, ABPI and ABHI.
The session features valuable insights from:
- Professor Andrea Manfrin – Deputy Director of Clinical Investigations and Trials at the MHRA
- Grainne Burley – Director of Clinical Operations (Country Head UK & Ireland) at Parexel
- Amy Barratt, Associate Director of Business Development at Panthera and former NIHR executive and diabetes research nurse
The discussion highlights why the UK is regaining competitiveness, addresses misconceptions around clinical trial activity in the UK, and explores how independent research sites are expanding capacity – particularly in community settings.
Key takeaways:
- NIHR study start-up timelines can be around 150 days, whereas for Site Management Organisations (SMOs) these timelines are typically significantly shorter with Panthera targeting a start-up time of around 50 days.
- Promoting the UK globally as a competitive destination for clinical trials is essential to secure ongoing business from global sponsors.
The webinar provides a concise overview for sponsors seeking to leverage the UK’s strengths for faster, more cost-effective trial delivery.
